There is no command in Scripture to memorize God’s Word. But it is clear that memorization furnishes us with:

• Tools for effective service: “The Scriptures are the comprehensive equipment of the man of

God, and fit him fully for all branches of his work.” (II Timothy 3:17 – Phillips Translation) (Ever hear someone say, “Well, somewhere in the Bible it says… ”)

• Victory over temptation: When faced with Satan’s onslaughts, Christ immediately

and effectively quotes Scripture: “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every

word that proceeds out of the mouth of God’… Then the devil left Him… ” (Matthew 4:4,

7, 10, 11).

• Obedience to God, and success in life: “This book of the law shall not depart from your

mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do according to

all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous and then you will have good

success.” (Joshua 1:8)a

Living with Christ in a victorious fashion without gaining command of the Scriptures is like:

Typing with arthritic feet

with wool socks on

upside down,

blindfolded

60 feet underwater – in ice cold sewage

while choking on a clogged air hose… that leaks

as someone shoots at you with a poisonous spear gun.

So… What are you waiting for? Get going on your Scripture memory!
